Following Olivia Culpo’s win at Miss Universe, Nana Meriwether has ascended to the Miss USA title Culpo has vacated. Nana, Miss Maryland USA 2012, was first runner up in Miss USA 2012, held earlier this year in Las Vegas.
About Nana Meriwether
Meriwether, 27, was born in South Africa while her parents were doing volunteer work. On returning to the USA she was raised in Potomac, Maryland and is a 2003 graduate of Sidwell Friends School. She attended Duke University (where her father Delano was the first ever African-American student of Medicine) for one semester, transferring to UCLA in 2004, where she graduated and was twice-named an All-American in volleyball. Nana had previously competed for the California state title, placing as high as first runner up (2010), before finally winning in Maryland.
Nana Meriwether Makes History
Nana’s rise to the role of Miss USA makes history – she is the first African American winner of Miss USA with South African roots. She may be a typical All-American girl, but still remembers her African heritage and regularly visits the region her family hails from.
