Do You Differ From the Pageant Girl Stereotypes
Contrary to popular belief, pageant girls are not all the ditzy and glitzy girls portrayed on shows like “Toddlers and Tiaras” and “Here Comes Honey Boo Boo.” As American reality TV shows exaggerate pageantry, it puts to shame those who are actually making a difference during their reigns, not just living in the lime light.
Pageant Girl vs the Pageant Girl Stereotype?
Glitz pageants are those that allow any age to wear make-up and win cash prizes. These are the girls portrayed in the TLC’s “Toddlers and Tiaras,” where they look like mini adults and their make-up looks like it was sprayed on with a hose. Natural pageants are those that do not allow girls under the age of 13 to wear make-up, deducting points or possibly disqualifying those who do. Pageants like National American Miss, American Coed, Miss America, and Miss USA encourage girls to be themselves. Not all of the girls look like stick figures of the “ideal” body for pageant girls. Glitz girls are all about competition. In natural pageants it does not matter if the girl you are up against is your best friend. In the glitz world, there is no such thing as friends, only competitors.
Natural girls are all about the sisterhood and their pageant family. The girls you meet throughout your years in competition are the girls who will remain your friends for life! The girl you stand next to on that stage could be your best friend, future maid of honor, or child’s Godparent. We are actually happy to see our competitor win because it means she was the right one for the position.
Don’t Be Ashamed of Chasing Your Dreams Not a Crown
During my 10 years of pageant life, I cannot remember a time when I was not criticized for being “one of those girls.” But what exactly does that mean? As if all pageant girls are the same. The influence of these reality TV shows such as “Toddlers and Tiaras,” and “Here Comes Honey Boo Boo” have tarnished the aspect of what a true queen is and represents. People seem to think that pageant girls just go from one pageant system to the next competing for different crowns and that is it. Those girls are the “crown chasers,” which is what reality shows only care to portray.
I guess some people would look at me as a “crown chaser” for that reason. I’ve competed in the same system since the age of 12 and have held four titles with them. But I only compete because I want to promote the foundation that I started and what I believe in. National American Miss has truly helped me do that. So do I think I am a “crown chaser”? No. I am a girl who has dreams and will do anything in my power to fulfill them.
What a Pageant Girl is All About
A true pageant queen is one who wins the crown and gives back to her community, represents a good cause, and becomes a role model for girls across the country, or even the world. The crown and banner are just a plus to these girls, along with the satisfaction of making an impact in the world. But who am I kidding? A “well-behaved,” responsible, respectable queen does not make headlines or good reality TV! Who would be interested in that? Tell me how many times you have heard about Miss America or Miss USA in the news that was not related to some scandal. It seems impossible that a pageant girl can make a difference in the world.
It is even more impossible for a pageant girl to prove that she is not the stereotype. You do not have to be skinny, flawless, or wear tons of makeup to win a pageant. So before you enter a pageant, know what you are getting into. Be able to distinguish between different pageant systems.
A true queen is not defined by her banner and crown, but through the actions of her heart.
